A Tribute To Brian Wilson

** Hit and miss charity gala honouring the Beach Boys’ creative force

Director: Hank Lena

This is one of those black tie industry events produced to raise money for a worthy cause and pay tribute to one of their own at the same time. The cause here is an organisation called Musicares and the honouree is Brian Wilson.

The disk features of a parade of artists, many of whom have no discernable link to Wilson or The Beach Boys as they have their way with Wilson’s songs. We hear the Red Hot Chili Peppers tackle I Get Around, Shelby Lynne perform Surfer Girl and Michael McDonald groan his way through Don’t Worry Baby.

One of the few highlights is a surprisingly excellent version of When I Grow Up To Be A Man by The Backstreet Boys. Fortunately, Wilson shows up at the end to lead the band through Good Vibrations and Fun, Fun, Fun.
