13th Floor New Song Of The Day: Angie McMahon – And I Am A Woman

Start your week off with this stunning new song from Melbourne’s Angie McMahon.

And I Am A Woman is taken from Angie’s upcoming debut album, Salt, due out July 26th.

Here’s the record company blurb with more info:

The release of Salt follows a breakthrough two years for Angie, who was awarded the prestigious Grulke Prize at SXSW this year (past honourees include Courtney Barnett and CHVRCHES), followed by a string of sold out international headline shows, coveted festivals spots and now the exciting news that her breakout single ‘Slow Mover’ has just reached gold status in Australia.

She’s also just been announced as the support act for Hozier‘s US tour in November.

Angie’s intimate and powerful songwriting couples melancholy and solitude with anthemic guts, and truthful storytelling, which is connecting with audiences around the world. Of her latest single, ‘And I Am A WomanAngie says: “There are all these things that our society teaches us about bodies, spaces, choices, feelings, safety, that we have to question and unlearn and do better with.  This song started as a heated conversation, but I had to finish it on my own and make it into music because I didn’t feel like talking, I felt like yelling. I wanted the hurting to be obvious.”

“What a knockout voice! Here’s a singer who has intimate tones that grumble and groan before intensifying into powerful Alanis Morrisette-style rock wails.” – Radio 13

“..big things are happening for the young talent, and you can hear why..”
– CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

“With the warmth of heavy guitar—though not as heavy as her punchy lyrics—McMahon is fueled by fiery anger and throbbing pain, taking us through an intimate narrative laced with her bluesy, hushed vocals.”
– PASTE

Lead by Angie‘s storytelling as she inspects the sometimes quiet and sometimes brutal lessons that have come with growing into a young woman, Angie’s 11 track debut features previously released singles ‘Slow Mover‘, which landed at #33 in triple j’s Hottest 100 in 2017 and secured an honourable mention in the Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition, as well as a nomination for APRA’s Song Of The Year. Her second single ‘Missing Me‘  landed at #49 in this year’s triple j Hottest 100 and delivered a nomination for Breakthrough Artist of the Year (AIR).  Follow up singles ‘Keeping Time‘ and recent hit ‘Pasta‘ have continued to connect with global audiences, proving Angie McMahon as one of Australia’s most important exports in recent years.

Describing herself as someone who loves honest and romantic songwriting about life, love and takeaway food, it is Angie’s humanness and authenticity that draws an audience in and has filled some of Australia’s most revered venues.  As well as support slots for the likes of Father John Misty, The Shins, Alanis Morissette, Angus & Julia Stone, Leon Bridges, Mumford & Sons and The Pixies.  Angie has just come off the back of touring with Australia’s favourite regional festival Groovin The Moo and has previously performed at Splendour in the Grass, Laneway Festival, All Points East (London), Best Kept Secret (Netherlands) and Way Back When (Germany).

Angie McMahon’s debut album SALT is out on July 26, 2019.
