13th Floor New Song Of The Day: deepState – Fortune

Let’s get ambient! Today we bring you new music from deepState. The song is Fortune.

deepState is Auckland-based artist Jessica Morgan. Fortune is taken from her upcoming EP, MMXXI. Here is the record company blurb with details:

May 25 2020deepState is the musical project of Jessica Morgan (she/her), a musician and songwriter based in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Today she shares ‘Fortune’, the second single from her upcoming debut EP MMXXI (out July 16 via Sunreturn).

Fortune is the second single to be released from deepState’s debut EP MMXXI (out July 16 on Sunreturn).

While its predecessor Sunrise sat at a cool 120 bpm (the ideal speed for House and Electro), Fortune finds its roots in slower, contemplative electronic genres. It embodies the grit of Trip-Hop, the delays of Ambient Dub and vocal stylings of late 00’s Witch House.

Reflecting on how the song came to be Jess says “Fortune was the most improvised song on the album. I came up with the vocals on the spot during recording, led by the melody which is sort of dark and melancholic paired with a heavy downtempo beat.”

Morgan has created a somber visualiser to accompany Fortune. She explains “I wanted the video for Fortune to reflect the songs vibe which was very much inspired by the moodiness of 1990’s trip hop and downtempo genres, utilising foggy urban scenes juxtaposed with more delicate slow-moving imagery.”

To celebrate the release of MMXXI, deepState has organised a stacked line up to perform at Whammy Backroom featuring Sunreturn album Baby Zionov, as well as happy hardcore duo Van Staden & Böhm.

$10 pre-sales are available from Undertheradar.co.nz. Tickets will be $20 on the door.
