13th Floor New Song Of The Day: Emily Rice – Over Time

Here’s Auckland gal Emily Rice’s latest single and here’s a review from The Reverend:

A well-crafted, sensual ride of a song. You have to catch the lyrics to realise it’s about breaking the possessive hold of a toxic relationship.

Taking all your leave/ With your heart on your sleeve/ Nobody told you/ You deserve the best.

Emily Rice is a New Zealand musician who has been self-producing her own songs for about six years.  A melodic Pop stylist with mellow Jazz overtones.

She has been in cathartic song-writing mode over these strange days.  This is one of the fruits. An EP, Auaha will follow early next year.

Dub R’n’B and a cool Jazz dance. A voice as smooth as honey but with a street-wise toughness. Well, Diana Ross and Motown Soul. Which was superior Pop. A perfect answer record to Just My Imagination. That’s how you imagine the dream of a perfect relationship.  Great so long as it all stays in your head. The flipside is that they always change once you engage the target of your affection. The Love Wars.

The song swings and moves hypnotically.  Also reminds me of Jerry Dammers when he took the Specials into a lounge music groove and hit a career peak. Ghost Town echoes. The Rolling Stones hit a similar groove with their recent treatment of that song.

A trademark saxophone solo appears in treated form. Sounding like an accordion.

There is more to look forward to. Emily is also a partner in music with husband Charles Looker and their Folk Pop duo Aro.

Rev Orange Peel

And watch for a live performance from Aro at The 13th Floor very soon!
