13th Floor New Song Of The Day: Fanfickk – Pity Party

Just in time for Valentine’s Day! Here’s New Zealand-based synth-pop artist Fanfickk and her new single, Pity Party.

We don’t know much about Fanfickk here at 13th Floor, other than what she’s told us…so here is her missive (we would like to see of photo of Dumpling, the cat):

Synthpop-adjacent musical artist Fanfickk is making a return this Valentine’s Day with a new single “Pity Party”. If you imagine Courtney Barnett gone riot grrrl, remove any romantic notions, then lower your expectations by 80%, you’re almost there. “I was musically inspired by Peaches, Darcy Clay, and Paul Simon, and thematically by my rubbish personality”, explains Fanfickk.

Recorded in her bedroom closet, Fanfickk found the production of “Pity Party” particularly cumbersome, as all of the sounds in the song were made using samples of her cat meowing. The most difficult part? “Trying to get my cat to face the mic while wearing the little headphones”.

A video for the song will be released on the 28th of February.

Laptop-wielding idealist Fanfickk is a New Zealand-based electro-pop star, world famous in her own house. She writes, sings and produces in her closet under the watchful eye of Dumpling the cat.

Fanfickk’s debut EP, “Stay Shy”, was released in February, 2016. The 4-track EP featured the song “Shreds”, described by music blog The Revue as “a shimmering electro-pop track that has a touch of Grimes, a dash of Goldfrapp, a sprinkle of Zola Jesus, and a whole lot of Kiwi spirit.”

In October 2016, Fanfickk followed up with the single “SF Rose”, which was written as a tribute to a lost friend. After a full year of radio silence, Fanfickk returned in 2018 with the audio meet cute “Cotton Candy” (featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlists in Germany and Switzerland), and a collaboration with fellow NZ producer Hybrid Rose on the high-energy “Just Press Play”.
