13th Floor New Song Of The Day: Hanna Ashcroft – Down
You can’t keep a good girl Down… or so says Hanna Ashcroft.
Not coincidentally, Down is the new release from Auckland’s Hanna Ashcroft (that’s Hanna without the second H). If you like what you here, be sure to check out Hanna’s 13th Floor Video Session here.
And then there’s the record company blurb, here:
Auckland based songwriter Hanna Ashcroft emerged earlier this year with her debut solo single “Everywhere“, drawing on soft R&B beats Hanna is giving us the second taste of her forthcoming EP with “Down” which is out now. Not one to be kept down, it’s a breakup song but with a message of strength and resilience at its core.
With delicate production by Andreas Arianto, the EP flaunts Hanna’s impressive vocal skills among a backdrop of breakups, travel, fragility and strength while drawing influence from the likes of Otis Redding, Joyra Smith and Charlotte Cardin.
Recorded during 6 weeks in Bali with Arianto, Hanna found it to be a vulnerable experience at first but wholly healing and comforting as she explains, “I wrote Down while I was in Bali reminiscing about a past relationship. At the time I was reading a book about the witch hunts too and it made me think about how women have been pushed down over the years in so many ways. The leading line “You tried to tame me, take the wild from my heart” really lends itself to that feeling of being pushed down and tamed which I know I have felt before. My Great Grandfather used to say to my Grandmother, “you can’t keep a good girl down”. And so the song touches on ways one could be pushed down whilst also expressing the strength that women have shown over the years and that we will always get back up after a fall.”
