13th Floor New Song Of The Day: Samuel Philip Cooper – Broken Heart Recovery
Its Sunday and a time for recovery and healing. In that spirit we bring you this new song from Wellington’s Samuel Philip Cooper.
The song is Broken Heart Recovery. Samuel reached out to us to tell us about his new music and we are happy to pass it on to you. Here’s what else Samuel sent:
WELLINGTON – Samuel Philip Cooper, an exciting and upcoming 25-year-old solo contemporary pianist from Wellington, New Zealand, is thrilled to release his debut solo-piano single, ‘Broken Heart Recovery’.
Deep, emotional and intense and using dynamic octaves and speeds provided by the piano, ‘Broken Heart Recovery’ is an expression of the journey of emotions behind a relationship break-up and having to move on, explains Wellington-based Samuel.
“At various points in our lives, we experience relationship break-ups, either with a partner, family or a friend, and that takes a tremendous mental toll,” he says. “This song is about my struggle in dealing with, and recovering from, a relationship break-up, and it remains a reminder to me, and others, that speaking up to close friends and family is important when experiencing sadness and despair.”
‘Broken Heart Recovery’ is one of two single releases that will form part of Samuel’s 18-song album, ‘Breaking The Silence’, which is set to be released in early November.
While developing his single and album alongside his day job as a Policy Advisor, Samuel has played for the elderly at Malvina Major Retirement Village, and performed at the Petone Working Men’s Club and the City Gallery Wellington. In December 2019, Samuel partnered with producer Toby Lloyd (Tiny Triumph Recordings) to record his compositions on a Kawai Studio grand piano at the Massey University recording studio.
A determined and passionate youth mental health advocate, Samuel’s’ solo piano is described as ‘soothing and healing’, and he hopes his compositions help to heal the soul of many. Samuel hopes by sharing his journey through Broken Heart Recovery, he will help build discussion around mental health, and reduce the stigma that surrounds such a concerning issue in New Zealand and around the world.
Beyond raising awareness for mental heath, Sam has been inspired by Ludovico Einaudi and US-based pianists, Michelle Mclaughlin and Brian Crain.
