New Zealand Opera announces new dates for Semele

New Zealand Opera announces rescheduled dates for its upcoming site-specific and immersive production of Semele at Auckland’s Holy Trinity Cathedral. The production was originally due to open on 10 September and will now open on 29 October, also for five performances.

The new dates are subject to progress with alert levels lowering over the next few weeks.

New Zealand Opera’s General Director Thomas de Mallet Burgess says that Semele promises to be an exquisite production, and that he is hugely grateful for the hard work the teams at NZ Opera and Holy Trinity Cathedral have put into making this change possible.

“The announcement that Auckland would move to Level 3 came on the same day the cast and creative team gathered to begin rehearsals for Semele. We tried to keep the production schedule on track with creative ways to safely rehearse, but the decision to limit gatherings to a maximum of 10 until at least 6 September meant we could not rehearse with our orchestra, chorus or choir, or perform to an audience” says de Mallet Burgess.

“Rescheduling the opening night of Semele until 29 October gives us the best chance of bringing Handel’s wonderful music to life in our new production. The rehearsals we’ve had so far have been hugely exciting and I believe that this is a production that people will talk about for a long time to come.”

All ticket-holders will be contacted directly by New Zealand Opera to transfer their tickets to a replacement performance.

The new dates are:  29, 31 October, 2, 4, 6 November.
