13th Floor New Song Of The Day: Estère – Calculated Risk

Start your Saturday off with this new song from Estère.

Calculated Risk has just been released and will appear on the Kiwi artist’s upcoming album, Archetypes, due out later this year.

Here’s what Estere has to say about the video, “We referenced things we’d seen in indie rock videos, and juxtaposed them with the portrayal of several black female characters trying to exist in a space where they feel uncomfortable. It’s about learning to thrive outside of the status quo and endeavouring to be bold like the greatest drag queens.”

And here is that inevitable record company blurb with more details:

Described as Ravyn Lenae meets St Vincent, in 2019 Estère’s songwriting and producing prowess grabbed the attention of esteemed Massive Attack producer Stew Jackson. Together, they created the future forward throwback album, Archetypes, featuring Estère’s sultry and soaring vocals, body-moving R&B grooves, dense production and engrossing narratives.

Calculated Risk explores the vulnerability of love, breaking free of constraints and reaching the sweet reward of emotional liberation: We’ve all been there; we’ve all felt this way – Do I follow my head or my heart?

Estère says, “There are age-old myths and archetypes about how women taking risks and being curious about things can literally ruin the world.  Calculated Risk explores how I can be freed from the chains of judgement and failure, opening up about my feelings, deep desires, and dreams. This song is about naming this part of myself – letting it breathe and allowing it to holler out – with no specific end goal in sight.”

Calculated Risk was co-produced alongside Stew Jackson (Massive Attack), and is released via all streaming services.
