Concert Review: Cloudy Single Release Party – Wine Cellar January 8, 2021
Cloudy with a chance of good musical vibes…that was the forecast as we headed on down to The Wine Cellar on this Friday night in Auckland.
We ran into Cloudy at the beginning of December when she opened for Jennifer K. Austin and were duly impressed. Now here she is with a new single to promote, I’ll Stay, and a new EP on the way.
Robbie Evison
First up was young Robbie Evison. Armed with just his guitar (all three acts tonight were solo) he got the evening going with a charming set that included a tune called Drano. So there is an edge there.
By the end of Robbie’s set the Wine Cellar’s vibe was warm and fuzzy as friends, family and fans created a warm welcome for each artist.
Lorenzo Hazelwood
In face I ran into Lorenzo’s mum just before her son took the stage.
Lorenzo is Lorenzo Hazelwood and you may know him as frontman of local hard rock band, Close To The Bone. I’ve never seen the band, but Lorenzo on his own is very impressive. He has a voice that immediately recalls the late, great Chris Cornell…and looks to match.
His 7-song set consisted of all originals (although Black Hole Sun was in my head) with new single Hate Me and set closer Pharos highlights.
Cloudy
Then it was time for Cloudy. The Auckland resident got plenty of support from the audience as she began by accompanying herself on ukulele , just as she had done when we last saw her.
Her ode to Donuts, Dear Dunken, was an early fave, then with six-string acoustic in hand she performed I’ll Stay, the single being released telling us this version is “the original, before it got sent to the studio”.
Then, it was back to the 90s with a piercing version of The Cranberries’ Zombie.
After 8 songs Cloudy wrapped things up with Addicted To You, urging fans to check out the new video.
A lovely night with lovely music and lovely people. Look for all three artists to make more noise as the year progresses.
