13th Floor New Song Of The Day: Eyrton Hall – Winter

It’s Winter! That’s the season and that’s the new song from Eyrton Hall.

Here’s a little something to keep you warm…and here’s the record company blurb:

We see the welcome return of Eyreton Hall with their stunning new single ‘Winter’.

The beautiful and melancholic ‘Winter’ is the alt-folk act’s first release since their critically acclaimed 2019 album ‘Spaces’.

Eyreton Hall is an intricate balance between the exceptional songwriting talents of Toni Randle (previously a Silver Scroll finalist) and the explorative musicianship of Andrew Keegan.

‘Winter’ was born as the duo pondered the next step in their creative journey.

“This one is all about music – the only deity I have ever truly believed in!” says Randle, “how fickle, yet amazing she is – and the huge influence she has over those under her spell” .

Andrew Keegan took the leading role on the production process for ‘Winter.’

“It was actually really freeing,” songwriter Toni Randle muses, “[it] enabled me to get inside the essence of the song without having to worry about other aspects of the process.”

‘Winter’ was recorded at Bigpop Studios with engineer Jacob Rush, whom Keegan credits for making the whole process “incredibly easy and spontaneously creative.”

Initial guitar parts were provided by previous Eyreton Hall contributors Ben King and Tasmania resident Jethro Pickett – with Pickett’s slide work being a fundamental element to the mood that Keegan wanted to capture.

The final steps of the creative process were completed by Bigpop’s Chris van de Geer (Bic Runga, Tim Finn, CHAII, Strawpeople, six60, stellar*, Greg Johnson).

“Chris took ‘Winter’ to a whole new level by adding his own excellent guitar parts and delivering a super sympathetic mix,” says Randle, “he added sonic layers we hadn’t envisioned or imagined – which is why Andy and I believe collaboration is so important”.

Elizabeth Ralph Smith (currently studying fine arts in Italy) created, in response to the song, the fabulous visual that has become the single’s cover. Longtime Eyreton Hall collaborator, Jared Kahl added colour and text to complete the final artwork, as well as producing the song’s accompanying lyric video. Randle feels the result “perfectly encapsulates the essence of ‘Winter.’”

Winter is out now via fast growing New Zealand indie label Bigpop Records.
