Jenny Mitchell unveils Trouble Finds A Girl, ft. Tami Neilson
Jenny Mitchell and Tami Neilson team up to sing a song that needs to be heard…Trouble Finds A Girl.
We love it when two of our favourite artists work together and today we’re happy to present this collaboration between Jenny Mitchell and Tami Neilson. The song’s message is a powerful, sombre and sobering one, but one that should be heard by everyone. Here’s the blurb with more:
Award-winning, alt-country Aotearoa artist, Jenny Mitchell has joined forces with the esteemed Tami Neilson to release the stirring ‘Trouble Finds A Girl’ – a powerful and direct response to sexual misconduct and sexual assault within the music industry.
Written together at an APRA Songhubs songwriting camp, ‘Trouble Finds A Girl’ is spacious and haunting. It carries a sense of caution, wrapped in palpable emotion; building to a dramatic and soaring swell of calls to “burn it down”.
The powerful track was inspired by Neilson and Mitchell’s personal experiences working in the industry and the work carried out by award-winning Stuff journalist Alison Mau who investigated #metoo claims within the New Zealand music industry. The revelations, and the bravery of many NZ artists who chose to speak out about their own experiences over the past year, sparked a conversation between Jenny and Tami in their songwriting session. Discussing their own experiences, and wanting to advocate for change, ‘Trouble Finds a Girl’ came to life.
“The song is for my younger self, who put up with far too much out of fear that if I didn’t ‘play the game’ I might lose opportunities”, says Jenny.
“It’s for my little sisters, who I hope to be able to guide and educate as they make their way through the music industry. It’s for the world in general, and any person who’s ever felt unsafe; inside the entertainment industry or not.”
Produced by Tami Neilson, the single was recorded in Auckland with Chip Matthews (Bass), Tom Broome (Percussion) and Brett Adams (Electric Guitar). The track also features the voices of Jenny’s family – Nicola and Maegan (sisters), her father Ron Mitchell; as well as New Zealand artist Kaylee Bell, and Australian artist Fanny Lumsden.
On collaborating with industry icon Tam Neilson, Jenny describes the experience as an honour. “Tami’s been one of the biggest musical inspirations of my life and has also been a fierce protector of me as I’ve navigated the industry. I can’t really even put into words what it means to have her on the song.”
Hailing from Southern NZ, and now based in Wellington, Jenny Mitchell has had an impressive career to date. Her 2018 album WILDFIRES, produced by Sydney’s Matt Fell, was awarded the 2019 Tui for Recorded Music NZ Best Country Music Artist. Following her first Tui, the album became the first NZ album to receive a nomination for Alt-Country Album of the Year at the 2020 Australian Golden Guitar Awards.
It’s clear this is just the beginning for a young artist who, “knows exactly who she is and feels no need to give way” – The Southland Times.
“Hailing from Southern NZ, Jenny Mitchell is a storyteller with songs wrapped in wisdom and wit. An artist who blends folk, alt-country and Americana into her own captivating style, this young kiwi songwriter, “is dynamite.” – Felicity Urquhart, ABC Australia.
