Great Gable – Tuning Fork June 16, 2022 (Concert Review)

Great Gable headlined a bill the featured and band that gave them a run for the money as Auckland’s Tuning Fork got this Thursday night rocking for a young and enthusiastic crowd.

Before we get into the music, let’s welcome back 13th Floor photographer Rachel Webb who has been out of action for a while. Be sure to check out her photos capturing all three bands preforming on the night.

Casper

CasperFirst up were Casper, taking the stage at 7:45, the sold out crowd was still arriving. But that didn’t stop this Hamilton trio from giving it a go. Their sound is indie-rock with a strong dollop of reggae…I was expecting four-piece, but only saw three on stage.

TBH, they came across as somewhat average, but they’re young with plenty of time to develop a sound of their own.

Corduroy

Wellington 6-piece Corduroy, however, made a big impression. CorduroyFrontperson Rosie Spearing is formidable. She managed to tame the crowd with her stage presence, her songs and her voice. And the band was tight-as, especially considering this was their first “proper” gig in about a year and a half and also, long time guitarist Will Cole recently left the country leaving ring-in Sam Cullen to fill his shoes.

So this was a band with something to prove, and prove it, they did.

The rest of the band is Riley Barrett (bass), Simon Kenrick (keys), Rafe Swan (drums) and Jacob Gasser (sax).

Their sound is a sweet mix of pop, rock, funk and disco. The set was well-pace and well-executed and together Rosie and the band made it feel like they were the headliners…next time we see them, they should be.

Great GableGreat Gable were up to the challenge, but just barely.

Their set started slowly, the crowd not quite with them. But hey, this is a band that knows what they’re doing and soon they found their groove.

Front man gave a well-deserved shout out to Casper and Corduroy and launched into an hour-long set featuring old faves and a few new tunes for good measure.

By the time they got around to Dancing Shoes (latest single) and Fireflies (Owl City cover), all was good with the crowd demanding, “more, more!”

So more we got… a three-song encore wrapping with The Wombats’ Let’s Dance To Joy Division.

It was a good night, especially for Corduroy…looking forward to hearing more from them.
