Dylan Deluxe Blues
The latest installation of the Bob Dylan Bootleg series: Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) is being released today in New Zealand. Along with the standard 2-disc version which features 35 outtakes, alternate versions, demos and live tracks from the late 60s and early 70s, there is a four-disc vinyl version and a four-CD deluxe version featuring Dylan’s entire 1969 performance at the Isle Of Wight Festival accompanied by The Band and the original Self Portrait album, newly remastered.
The standard 2-CD version is available pretty much everywhere, while the vinyl version is not being released locally by Sony (although some intrepid retailers will be importing copies). And it looks like if you want to get your mitts on the 4-CD Deluxe version, your only option is JB Hi-Fi.

I think it’s wrong. Record companies are shooting themselves in the foot. It’s all well and good if you have a JB in your area and that’s your favourite store but all of those small (and rapidly disappearing) independents that you buy from and support. Is it little wonder that people now buy from the likes of Amazon, sending much needed revenue off shore to some big multi-national that doesn’t really need those two or three sales.
In all fairness Sony are not the only one to do things like this. It’s common practice in the trade but I think Sony should have played fair here and supported the smaller stores that desperately need to keep their businesses running by offering their loyal customers the product and services that they expect from them in exchange for that regular custom. I expect that JB’s buying power also had a lot to do with this and that there was some bully boy pressure and a little favouritism going on here also.
So, poor show Sony. How about showing the music buying public some favoritism also.Next time something like this is coming out share the deal or stop complaining that people are buying more and more on the internet.
