Remi Wolf – The Powerstation: January 10, 2023

Remi Wolf is on a mission and that is to make her fans feel more at home, more comfortable in their own skin. That’s just what she did on this blustery January night in Auckland.

Noting that this was her first time in New Zealand, and expecting it to be summer here, the 26-year-old California native asked, “Is this cyclone thing normal, or not normal?”

While it may have been unseasonably chilly, and wet, and windy outside, the mood inside was most definitely warm and welcoming.

I arrived halfway through opening act Foley’s set and already the crowd was bonding with the artist, cheering along with abandon, not at all bothered by the nasty weather outside.

At about 9:30 the lights went down and the PA blasted out Drake’s Passionfriut, a few minutes later the track ended and anticipation heightened. Finally the three band members took the stage to the sound of Mungo Jerry’s In The Summertime!

How ironic.

The band jammed for a few minutes and Remi appeared, starting things up properly with Quiet On The Set, the first of eight songs to be performed from Remi’s debut album, Juno.

The band, anchored by drummer Conor Malloy, locked into a funky groove that sounded just a bit like something the Red Hot Chili Peppers might conjure. Not surprising then, that a song titled Anthony Kiedis popped up later in the set.

Yes, there was the band and there was Remi, jumping and shouting and giving her all, but as Wolf remarked midway through the hour-long set,’the concert is 20% us and 80% you’, and she did everything possible to make everyone in the house feel a part of the show.

Her third of three rules she laid out for her fans was, ‘have the best fucking night of your life’, and it looked as though many of the young audience members were doing just that.

Highlight were Sexy Villain, which became a big ‘ol singalong  and Crazy, the Gnarls Barkley oldie.

Conor and Remi switched place so that he could vocalize his Positive Affirmations…I just love hearing a thousand fans yelling, ‘I know how to do my taxes’.

The set wrapped with a trio of tunes from the 2020 EP, I’m Allergic To Dogs!…Woo!, Photo I.D. and encore number Disco Man.

‘I get to be my weird self!’, Remi gushed

And so did we.
