New Music Friday: 13th Floor New Album Picks: March 10, 2023
New Music Friday is here again. The 13th Floor’s Marty Duda presents this week’s 5 new albums for your consideration including 4 artists we’ve interviewed! Sorry, we couldn’t get Miley here!
Miley Cyrus – Endless Summer Vacation (Smiley Miley & Columbia Records)
Multi-platinum selling recording artist, songwriter and trailblazer Miley Cyrus will release her eighth studio album Endless Summer Vacation today, following the release of her new single Flowers. 2023 finds Miley the strongest and most confident she’s ever been, with the music and imagery of Endless Summer Vacation serving as a reflection of the strength she’s found in focusing on both her physical and mental well-being. Recorded in Los Angeles and produced with Kid Harpoon, Greg Kurstin, Mike WiLL Made-It and Tyler Johnson, Miley describes the album as her love letter to LA. Miley Cyrus is one of the most influential humans in pop culture and the first female artist to surpass 85 million monthly listeners in Spotify history.
The Long Ryders – September November (Cherry Red Records)
This is the first album in four years from the band who helped invent Alt-country and Americana. The new studio album follows up the critically acclaimed Psychedelic Country Soul. Due to the unexpected passing of bassist Tom Stevens, bass duties on the new album were shared by Murry Hammond of Americana stalwarts the Old 97s and the Long Ryders’ own Stephen McCarthy. Guests appearing in the album include D. J. Bonebrake of Los Angeles’s punk legends X and Royal Academy of Music violinist Kerenza Peacock of the Coal Porters.
Long Ryder guitarist/mandolinist Sid Griffin states September November is “two thirds the distilled alt- country genre we helped found back in the 1980s, one third Paisley Underground adventurism yet seasoned with a dash of our own crazed soulfulness thrown in.”

Frankie Rose – Love As Projection (Slumberland)
After spending nearly two decades establishing herself across New York and Los Angeles independent music circles, Frankie Rose returns after six years with a fresh form, aesthetic, and ethos embodied in her new full-length album Love As Projection, out today on Slumberland. The former Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls member’s fifth solo LP follows 2017’s Cage Tropical. Celebrated by countless critical and cultural outlets over the years for her expansive approach to songwriting, lush atmospherics, and transcendent vocal melodies and harmonies, Love As Projection is a reintroduction of her established style through the new lens of contemporary electronic pop. Painstakingly written, recorded, and engineered through some of the most tumultuous times in history, this new collection of songs harnesses the power and propulsion of Frankie’s early DIY-centric punk days without losing sight of the immersive, dreamlike world-building she’s been known for in recent years.

Matt Joe Gow – Between Tonight & Tomorrow (Checked Label Services)
Between Tonight & Tomorrow is the new record from Melbourne-based, New Zealand-born musician Matt Joe Gow. The follow-up to the award-winning Break, Rattle And Roll, it is sonically a departure from its predecessor with raw, unvarnished production, and because of that has an undeniable directness and vulnerability. From the prominent intro rattle of a guitar string on the southern swagger-bound Shipwreck through to the heartfelt alt. country rocker Til My Whole Heart Bursts it is clear that the raw production serves as the most direct delivery of what is Joe Gow’s most personal and introspective album.
Quoting Matt: “We had a clear intention to make a stripped back record, to capture the performances and sound as honestly as possible, and to abandon many standard conventional studio production techniques, which allowed for the most accurate picture of how we sound as a band, live.”

Shana Cleveland – Manzanita (Hardly Art Records)
Today songwriter, musician, visual artist, and lead guitarist of surf rock band La Luz Shana Cleveland has released her 3rd solo album. Manzanita, like her 2019 solo LP Night of the Worm Moon, is set back and away from the genre-recombinant garage pop of her band La Luz. On it she continues to play guitar and vocals. The LP is set in the natural world and Cleveland’s move to rural California allowed for most of the. songwriting to take place outside. Shana says, “This is a supernatural love album set in the California wilderness.”
