Robbie Robertson of The Band Has Died Age 80: R.I.P.
Robbie Robertson, guitarist and chief songwriter for The Band has died, age 80, in Los Angeles after a long illness.
The importance of The Band cannot be underestimated, and Robbie was one of the creative sparks along with Band-mates Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson. Sadly, Garth is the last man standing.
The Band began up in Canada as the The Hawks, backing American rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins. Robertson’s solo on Who Do You Love is, one of many, career highlights.
But it was Robertson’s songwriting that really left a marks, instant classics like The Weight, Up On Cripple Creek, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, The Shape I’m In and It Makes No Difference.
The Band split after The Last Waltz in 1976 with Robertston setting out on his own and working with Martin Scorsese.
