New Music Friday: 13th Floor New Album Picks: November 17, 2023

New Music Friday finds Troy Kingi wasting time and Dolly Parton as a self-proclaimed rock star. Check out all five of the 13th Floor’s top new releases out today!

The 13th Floor’s Marty Duda picks these five new releases for your consideration:

  1. Troy KingiTroy Kingi & The Room Service – Time Wasters: Soundtrack To Current Day Meanderings (AAA) Troy’s 7th installment in his ambitious 10/10/10 series finds him and his crack band going ambient. Troy says, “An instrumental album was never really on the cards but lately I’ve actually been feeling alienated by my own voice, it’s just the older I get, the more my voice is changing, and honestly, I feel for the worse. So I thought what better way to get myself out of the self-loathing vocal dump and rejuvenate the creative spices than to just stop singing and let the music speak for itself. 2. Dolly PartonDolly Parton – Rockstar (Butterfly/Big Machine) Well, she’s in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, so Dolly’s made a rock album with a little help from friends like Debbie Harry, Joan Jett, Paul McCartney and many others.  “I am very honored and privileged to have worked with some of the greatest iconic singers and musicians of all time, and to be able to sing all the iconic songs throughout the album was a joy beyond measure. I hope everybody enjoys the album as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together!”

3. Andrew BirdAndrew Bird – Outside Problems (Loma Vista/Concord) Following last year’s Inside Problems comes Outside Problems. Says Andrew, “none of these songs were recorded with the intent of making an album. I just happened to capture moments of melodic exploration over a period of time.”

4.The Blips The Blips – The Blips Again (Cornelius Chapel) Something of a “supergroup” in their native Birmingham, Alabama, The Blips release their second album. According to their label, “Once upon a time, The Blips came together, rose above, braved the elements, forced the issue, carried the weight and dealt with the demons that require the making of a record.  And now they have done it . . . Again.” Watch for a 13th Floor interview soon!

5.Juliana Hatfield Juliana Hatfield – Sings ELO (American Laundromat) Last week Shooter Jennings was singing Warren Zevon, this week Juliana sings the songs of Electric Light Orchestra. “ELO songs were always coming on the radio when I was growing up. They were a reliable source of pleasure and fascination (except for “Fire On High” which scared the heck out of me). With this album of covers I wanted to get my hands deep into some of the massive ‘70’s hits but I am also shining a light on some of the later work (“Ordinary Dream” from 2001’s “Zoom” album, “Secret Messages” and “’From The End Of The World”, both from the ‘80’s)
