Diane Coll – I Don’t Know: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day

Atlanta-based folk singer-songwriter Diane Coll’s second album, Old Ghosts, will be released on January 16; the second single, I Don’t Know, is out now. The song is a lighthearted look at learning to let go.

Here’s the record company blurb with more:

“There is great relief in detaching from any outcome,” Diane told The Bluegrass Situation. “There is great beauty in not knowing what’s around the corner.”

Old Ghosts, overall, is a moodier, darker, and more introspective collection. Its first single, “This Heart,” is also out now. Glide Magazine noted the track “feels warm and reflective” and “eventually gives way to rich harmonies that accentuate its emotional power.”

“This song carries deep meaning for me and is one that I suspect will continue to be a challenge at various times in my life,” Coll says of the song. “I made a choice and continue to stake my claim for keeping my heart open. At times, this is sometimes easier said than done, but I like a good challenge. I do hope this song will inspire others to self-reflect and change course if need be.”

Coll grew up on a steady, eclectic diet of 70’s AM/FM radio in Chicago, and immersed herself in then Athens and Atlanta music scenes in the 90s, releasing an album with a trio called Rosary. Although life circumstances sidelined her musical endeavors for a number of years, she does have a goldfish to thank for reigniting her passion for songwriting in 2017, which inspired her first solo release, Happy Fish and Other Delights, in October 2022.

As a mental health therapist, Coll considers music her therapy and, as a lifelong music lover, honors the sacred space between performer and listener. Old Ghosts focuses on a beginning, after Coll began a new phase of her life.

“When relationships end, it is time to self-reflect and take inventory of what’s been waiting in the wings,” she says. “To live as authentically as we can, we often must acknowledge and look our own old ghosts in the mirror and heal thyself first and foremost. Old Ghosts is my own journey through some old haunts. In the end, there was great healing, away from the external world and back to the internal world.”

The title track is a dynamic and harmony-laden reminder that there is always growth around the corner if we pay attention to the old wounds within us, while “Glow, Candlelight” offers an opportunity to find comfort during a dark night of the soul. Others, like “I Don’t Know,” are playful, a rhythmic resignation to letting go. “Move It” sets a firm boundary, while “When You Fly” finds her moving on.

“I want my music to communicate to my listeners that they are not alone,” Coll says. “Life is good even when it doesn’t feel like it.”
