Sam Bambery – The Burnout: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day
Hot on the heels of the release of his hit debut single ‘Parasite’ Ōtautahi/Christchurch artist Sam Bambery releases ‘The Burnout’.
Here’s the blurb with more:
‘The Burnout’ is a late-summer bop for the distressed. Pitched-down congas nestle in between semi-cliche guitar work. An almost-parody of the quintessential festival sound, showing that Bambery wears and internalises a range of influences.
‘The Burnout’ is the second single from Sam Bamberys sophomore album ‘Rubricator’ releasing May 17th 2024 via Under Underground Records.
Whereas weird-rock dispositions found themselves naturally in previous single Parasite, The Burnout falls into deep guitar groove and Latin-ish ecstasy. Solid drum and percussion grooves into lavish slide guitar contrast strongly with Bambery’s preoccupation with falling apart in the face of overwhelming work. The Burnout shows a duality in the Ōtautahi-based artist.
“I love lyrically desolate and introspective songs, but also songs with this almost dissociative groove that makes you forget and tumble through emotions. We recorded this live, with some percussion and piano overdubs that enhanced the mood. Working with De Stevens on this one was a treat, I guess we understand the cliché of surf-psychedelia in Aotearoa’s rock music and wanted to turn it on it’s head a little bit”
The music video is a homage to turbulent film experimentation on Super 8, with Bambery directing static shots with characterful costuming and plenty of personality. Crisp film texture overlays itself with scratched film and splotches of alcohol in. Bambery’s inclinations, although completely DIY and somewhat amateurish, fall into the early works of Len Lye and his experimental film work.
‘The Burnout’ is the second single from Sam Bambery’s sophomore album ‘Rubricator’, set for release May 17th 2024 on Under Underground Records.
‘Rubricator’ a newly minted set of songs produced with De Stevens (Marlin’s Dreaming, Asta Rangu) and recorded in houses, old photography studios and lounge rooms across Aotearoa/New Zealand, is now available for pre order via bandcamp.
‘The Burnout’ is out now and available on all streaming platforms.
