India.Arie – Taking On The Music Industry (Interview)
India.Arie is sharing the bill with Joss Stone for two shows in New Zealand this month. They will be at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Friday, April 25th and at Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre on Sunday, April 27th. India.Arie has been recording for over a decade, accumulating of 10 million album sales world wide while winning four Grammys out of 21 nominations. India recently took a four year hiatus to take stock of her place in the music industry. She returned in 2013 with her album Songversation. Her thoughts on the politics of the music business came more into focus this past February when she wrote an open letter to the Grammys. In that letter she accused the Grammys of “all but excluding young black America and black artists in general”. The 13th Floor’s Marty Duda spoke to India.Arie and asked her to elaborate on that letter, which she was more than happy to do.
