New Music Friday: 13th Floor New Album Picks: December 6, 2024
New Music Friday is here once more. The new releases are winding down as the year comes to an end but we’ve still got five new albums we think you should be aware of that are out today.
The 13th Floor’s Marty Duda picks these five new releases for your consideration:
- Lucinda Williams – Sings The Beatles From Abbey Road (Highway 20/Thirty Tigers) What better way to start your Friday than with Lucinda Williams and a handful of Beatles songs? Recorded at the legendary studio in London, the new collection serves as Vol. 7 of her celebrated Lu’s Jukebox series and is the first new volume in almost four years. Lucinda covers 12 Beatles classics including at least one from the Abbey Road album.
2. Lauren Mayberry – Vicious Creature (Island) Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry has released her debut solo album. Speaking about the songs that make up her LP, Mayberry explained that she wanted to adopt “a sort of character where I could really let go of the idea that I need to be ‘nice,’ because I think that holds so many women back in their lives. If I didn’t have to be seen as ‘nice,’ I would feel comfortable telling certain people to fuck off when they treat me like shit – on this record, and in these songs, I get to do that.”
3. White Denim – 12 (Bella Union) Yes, it’s the band’s 12th album, so all makes sense. The band have been led by James Petralli since their inauguration, moving from frantic acid-tinged garage rock through to blissed out psych grooves and beyond. Birthed in Austin, Texas, sessions for 12 took place after the songwriter make a key life switch – relocating his family to Los Angeles. “This is the first White Denim record where I’ve engineered and been the main producer,” he proudly states. “I’ve touched every sound that’s on there.”
4. DeWolff –Muscle Shoals (Mascot) The psychedelic blues-rockers travel from Netherlands to Muscle Shoals to soak up the vibe. When the opportunity for DeWolff to head to Muscle Shoals to record it was a dream come true. “Even before we were into Southern Rock, as a kid, Luka got an album of Southern Soul, and most of it was recorded at FAME.” says singer/guitarist Pablo van de Poel of his brother. “Our introduction to Soul didn’t start with James Brown; we started with Wilson Pickett.”
5. Late June – Mending (Believe) Aotearoa-based producer Late June has just announced his new album ‘Mending‘. Sonny Bevin, the artist behind Late June, has established himself as a prolific producer with a decade-long career. He has garnered a dedicated following through three albums, numerous EPs, and a multitude of singles.
