Amamelia – Summerlong: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day

Just as the weather warms Amamelia graces us with Summerlong. Following 2025’s The Floating Opera, this is the second single from a new album due for release in 2026.

Amamelia is the musical project of Amelia Berry (she/her), a musician and songwriter from Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) who is currently based in Naarm (Melbourne). Amamelia’s catalogue explores electronica and breakbeat while experimenting with sapphic synthesis.

Summerlong’s drums snap and bounce, boops and beeps echo & delay while an organ bubbles away and a janky old string machine spumes.

“Honestly, when I started writing this song I think I was just feeling really homesick,” gushes Berry. “I was trying to tap into that kinda wistful Tāmaki Makaurau summer feeling. I think Summerlong is about that tension of just being here now but wanting forever to come, wanting to kind of escape to something beautiful and distant.”

“There is a lot of Yamaha CS10 synth on this song and even more Roland RS09 String Machine. There’s loads of hand percussion and a generous smattering of spring reverb from an old hi fi reverb box I got on ebay.”

For Summerlong Berry returns to work with Madison Van Staden; “Madison’s vocal performance is just perfect, so delicate and emotive.” 

When asked how she feels now that the song is finished, Amamelia says “I’m shocked with how well it turned out and I’m just something I’m really proud of.”

Amamelia began with humble beginnings with Berry quietly uploading a breakbeat rework of Savage’s 2005 single Swing to Bandcamp. Her debut WOW! was shortlisted for the Best Independent Debut award at the 2021 Taite Music Prize and Berry took home the Favourite Solo Act Award later that year at the inaugural Student Radio Network Awards. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of influences, including Yellow Magic Orchestra, Virginia Astley, and LTJ Bukem, Amamelia’s second album Bananamelia! led her to win Te Manu Taki Tāhiko o te Tau (Best Electronic Artist) at the 2024 Aotearoa Music Awards.

Amamelia has a wide discography of remixes, lending her hand at recontextualising songs by including Hallelujah Picassos, Imugi 이무기, Samara Alofa & PollyHill, Null Object, Grecco Romank and Baby Zionov. Outside of Amamelia, Berry is involved with musical acts Babyteeth, Van Staden & Böhm (VSB), the Forbin Project, Fimo and Gayblade. In the past she’s been the mastermind behind the romantic jangle of Polyester (who were recently covered by The Beths), and one third of queer DJ trio PWB.
