The Hugh Cornwell concert at The Tuning Fork in Auckland’s CBD fringe was an intoxicating blend of new material and classic hits. Cornwell is a semi-regular visitor to New Zealand, having last played at the Powerstation in 2019.
For the uninitiated, Blonde Redhead are a New York-based band featuring twin Italian-American brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace (on guitars and drums respectively), and Japanese-American vocalist and guitarist Kazu Makino.
Kurt Cobain famously declared Teenage Fanclub his favourite band, and over a thirty-plus year career the Scottish band have gone from scrappy indie underdogs, to critics’ darlings, to an act now probably best described as a “beloved institution”.
It’s a humid, steamy night in Tāmaki Makaurau, which feels like the perfect time to head to the Hollywood Theatre in Avondale to get a dose of Alex Cameron and his sleazy, sax-drenched tunes.
