White Chapel Jak are a band for music obsessives. They also take care of business and make sure the partygoers get their money’s worth. Call them a Covers Band, or a Tribute Band. At the core, they are a polished, hard-working unit and they love to stretch out and jam a little.
They certainly do rock in the USSR and the succinctly-named Hit Pump did just that in an epic two and a half hour set tonight. Covers of 26 songs from 20 bands. I don’t remember the last time I was at such a packed Powerstation show and the audience was seething all night.
Paradise or the Impermanence of Ice Cream – A Wildean comedy on Death and Mortality. The loss of spirituality to the new God Science. Pretty girls make graves, the impermanence of vultures and why ice cream is sexy. Sort of like butter and Last Tango in Paris. The same source, cows also make an appearance.
Nikita Tu-Bryant, with her back-combed bouffant, looks poised and triumphant as the trio called Kita take the stage. With the opening salvo from the drummer, a Ginger Baker-style rapid-fire assault, they run through most of the tracks from newly-minted debut album Kita.

It was the Meow label showcase – The Butlers, Molly and the Chromatics, There’s a Tuesday & Michael James Keane. They rocked Auckland’s Powerstation, unleashing an energy and spirit that is pure New Zealand.
New artist Keeley Shade has released her debut EP. It’s a small gem of Folk Pop meditative music which also dances softly with the deeper influences of Country. All five tracks shimmer and radiate out, from slow and quiet to rise in dramatic tension.
The Julie Lamb Outfit play easy-listening Rock from the early days of FM radio, real DJ’s and American Top Forty. Music as comfortable as the pajamas’ some of the band are wearing. Great ensemble playing and packed with enough Soul, Funk and R’n’B to satisfy the most jaded palate.
