Belladonna – Driving Home For Christmas: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day

After a long hiatus, Wellington-based artist Belladonna returns with her first new music in years. We are excited to announce her single Driving Home For Christmas, arrives today, and will be the first offering from her forthcoming debut album.

Here is the blurb with more:

Following the success of her two EPs, Bella Cook – the voice behind Belladonna – has been quietly crafting her debut full-length album in close collaboration with producer Chris Armour (Miles Caulder).

Driving Home For Christmas reveals a new emotional depth in Belladonna’s songwriting and a step away from the quirky pop sound she’s known for. “During the writing of this record I returned to writing on the guitar by myself,” says Bella. “The solitary approach gave me space to reflect and play with what I was creating. We wanted the final recordings to have a similar feeling to the demos I recorded in my room”

A natural storyteller, Belladonna’s lyrics are often narrative driven, and Driving Home For Christmas is no exception. “I wrote driving home for Christmas shortly after my flat burnt down. I moved to a new house and nothing seemed stable.  I found comfort in returning to a relationship, much like returning to your hometown over the holidays. He’d come over and we’d sit on my bed and listen to the neighbours trees creaking. It was the familiarity that I was craving at the time, but I knew it would never be enough.”

After receiving a NZ On Air New Music Single grant in late 2023 Driving Home For Christmas was recorded across several Wellington studios with Chris Armour producing, and features contributions from Dave Jellyman and Hikurangi Schaverien-Kaa. It was mixed and mastered by Bevan Smith (The Beths, Glass Vaults).
