Bill Direen at Audio Foundation This Weekend

We just got this message from Bill Direen about his show in Auckland this weekend…

Bill Direen here! We thought you might be interested in, and perhaps able to pass on the word about, our performance.  It’s the first ever presentation of a song cycle written in collaboration with poet Alan Brunton (1948-2002) about the ideals and practice of Michael Joseph Savage.

There will be two performances this weekend, and the cycle is the first part of the evening. The second part of each show is a mixture of songs and improvisations, with a narrative thread.

The music and lyrics (and a little film too) will take place at our favoured Audio Foundation, 4 Poynton Tce, Auckland, on Fri May 18th and Saturday May 19th, at 8:30pm.

In sum, the evening comprises about fifteen songs and six improvisations by accomplished musicians. It begins with the song cycle about the Depression years of the 1930s, before returning back to years in Egypt and the Western Front. The last piece is a collective composition with text, simulating a sporting event that actually occurred in the 1920s.

We hope you may tell other people about this and encourage them to attend. We are a group of eight musicians and a technician, without state funding.

Door sales are just $15, and tickets, purchased beforehand are only $10 !!
