Bob Neuwirth, a Rock & Roll Zelig, Has Died Age 82: R.I.P.
Bob Neuwirth was a folk singer and songwriter and friend of Bob Dylan. Patti Smith described him as “a catalyst for action”.
Neuwirth was something of a rock & roll zelig, always at the right place and the right time, but somewhere in the background.
That’s him in the corner talking to Allen Ginsberg in the iconic Subterranean Homesick Blues “video”. And speaking of Dylan, Neuwirth was part of the cast of thousands to make up the The Rolling Thunder Review…he can be seen the Renaldo And Clara film.
He was at Woodstock and Monterey Pop, he co-wrote Mercedes Benz with Janis Joplin and recorded with John Cale and T-Bone Burnett.
His list of achievements is lengthy and his influence on pop culture immeasurable.

Neuwirth: a very astute, clever and complex man. Sat next to him at a Joan Baez workshop at SXSW some years ago, just prior to George W getting elected for the second time. He was there with the Subdudes, from New Orleans; everyone there trying to encourage voters to shy away from George. You could sense Joan was in awe of his presence.
