Cindy – Big Summer Blowout: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day
Cindy signs to Sunreturn, and release their new single Big Summer Blowout. Cindy are the garage rock group of consisting of Scott Brown, James King, Gloria Florence and Mitchell Ihle, based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). Here is the blurb with more:
For nearly a decade Cindy has been toiling in Tāmaki’s independent venues, leading Rolling Stone AUS/NZ to describe them as “the type of unpretentious, if-you-know-you-fucking-know, resolutely DIY band that rewards discovery.”

Cindy has supported international talent like OFF!, Mean Jeans and Japanese touring acts Guitar Wolf, Shonen Knife, King Brothers, ALKASILKA and Watusi Zombie. Where possible they’ve reciprocated the cultural exchange, traveling to tour Japan in 2018 and 2023. Cindy’s 2018 eponymous debut EP and two follow up singles (2020’s Big Energy and 2023’s B21) have amassed tens of thousands of streams and are a firm favourite on Aotearoa’s alternative radio stations.
Cindy has teamed up with Sunreturn to release their latest single Big Summer Blowout and announce their first ever shows in Ōtepoti (Dunedin) and Ōtautahi (Christchurch) to celebrate!
Big Summer Blowout hits the listener at full tilt, with layers of stoned phased feedback washing over powerful, no nonsense garage punk. Primed to blow your speakers, Big Summer Blowout was recorded live and direct to tape by Daren McShane at Earwig Studios, then mixed by Kody Nielson (The Mint Chicks, SILICON, Unknown Mortal Orchestra) and mastered by Steven Marr (Doprah).

“I left the house to go and get groceries and when I got back Gloria had written and demoed the song already,” notes Scott Brown. “The lyrics are from Gloria’s perspective, about how I have mastered a technique about getting cheaper groceries…”
“The music came together pretty quickly, I had been listening to alot of Spacemen 3 so the feedback over the top of the chords must have been influenced by that.
“Completing the song and having it 100% finished is a great feeling. We have always struggled to get to the mixing stage right – hence our slow output of releasing songs. Gloria has brought a very simplified way of how to write. I think we have finally found our feet.”
To celebrate the release of Big Summer Blowout Cindy is travelling down to Te Waiponamu for the first time to perform two shows. On June 13 they’ll perform in Ōtepoti (Dunedin) at The Crown Hotel with Hōha, Ramraid and Shotgun Wedding and on June 14 in Ōtautahi (Christchurch) at Space Academy with Best Bests & Guests. Tickets are available now from Undertheradar.co.nz.
