Come Together: Big End Of Year Bash 2024 Civic Theatre December 6, 2024
The Come Together All-Star Band reconvened one more time this year to play a mix of classic rock songs including the five best rocks songs of all time as voted by Kiwi fans.
The top 5 selections will surprise no one, neither will the rest of the 24-song setlist, but what is surprising is the way this band and these vocalists make these very familiar songs sound so alive.
As usual, the band consists of leader/guitarist Jol Mulholland along with Mike Hall on bass, Alistair Deverick on drums, Matthias Jordan playing the keyboards and Brett Adams on guitar.
Tonight’s vocalists include Julia Deans (Fur Patrol), Milan Borich (Pluto), Dianne Swann (The Bads), Seamus Johnson (Seamous) and Jenny Skulander (Devilskin).
It was Jenny who made the biggest impression on the night….her power and range allowed her to have her way with Led Zeppelin classics like Immigrant Song, Since I’ve Been Loving You and Stairway To Heaven…not to mention a killer performance of Heart’s Barracuda.
Highlights for me were Milan’s take on Born To Run. Dianne’s passionate Because The Night and Julia’s Moonage Daydream.
Actually, my fave was Brett Adams’ version of Neil Young’s Like A Hurricane. I have gone on and on about how I feel about Brett’s guitar playing, so I’ll try not to embarrass myself or him and just say it was incredible (as was his Oh Well).
We got two hour + sets and 24 songs, with set two counting down the top three songs voted…Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain, Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb and Led Zeppelin’s Stairway To Heaven.
The encore found Dianne and the band ripping through Smells Like Teen Spirit while Seamus showed us what he was made of with his Plant-like performance of Whole Lotta Love.
What becomes immediately obvious when attending any of these Come Together shows is that these song are best heard live, loud and with a stack of Marshalls.
Fortunately there are still plenty of classic albums to plunder to let’s see what the Come Together team brings us in 2025.
