Concert Review: Lil Mosey – Powerstation, 11 June 2019

17-year-old Seattle rapper Lil Mosey, took the Powerstation stage to the enthusiastic screams from the largely under-age fans gathered to hear the melodic rap songs from his debut album, Northsbest.

Mosey gained a huge following with a string of single releases on Sound Cloud and Instagram. He then supported Juice Wrld on his most recent tour and then announced his Debut Northsbest World Tour Down Under.

The majority of the audience was found in the underage section upstairs – no surprise as Mosey is still in his teens. Twenty minutes before Lil Mosey’s scheduled arrival, the crowd began to scream his name urging him to come on, whipping to a frenzy by the time he burst onto the stage only minutes behind schedule.

The hit Noticed, which gained over 200,000,000 plays on Spotify, drove the upstairs crowd wild and I noticed the floors begin to bounce due to the amount of energy coming from the underage audience.

Mosey later performed a cover of D Rose by Lil Pump, this tune was an obvious favourite with the crowd as people threw their drinks in the air upon the bass drop. Moments later it was Old Town Road. I admire Lil Mosey for performing covers of other artists amongst his own tunes.

My favourite moment was when Lil Mosey invited a lady up on stage. Once seating her in a chair, he then sung his song Greet to the lucky girl.

Lil Mosey finessed the stage, constantly interacting with the audience. There was a brief break where Mosey made each side of the venue compete by out-screaming the opposing side. Fortunately, this worked well, and later during the set Mosey screamed “guns up” making the crowd raise their hands while he began a new song.

Unfortunately, during the second to last song someone attempted to jump on stage with Lil Mosey, security was quick to act; dragging him off stage.

Lil Mosey finished off his set with the whole crowd chanting his name followed by a round of extremely loud digital gunshots as the finale. Mosey left us with some words before walking off the stage “This my first time out here, y’all are so lit” followed by “Whatever you do, do what the fuck you wanna do.” Overall, an intimate yet energetic performance from such an young, highly acclaimed artist.

I was hoping the New Zealand audience would get the opportunity to hear the live debut of his latest release Cartier featuring Chris Brown, but unfortunately this wasn’t the case. However, Auckland was fortunate enough to have access to the limited edition merch that is only on sale for the Australia and New Zealand shows.
