Cosey Fanni Tutti – 2t2 (Conspiracy International) (13th Floor Album Review)
Cosey Fanni Tutti is one half of industrial synthpop act Chris & Cosey, the two remaining living members of 70/80s groundbreaking Industrial act Throbbing Gristle. On her latest solo album, 2t2, the last being Tutti in 2019, Cosey has given us nine new compositions, composed, recorded and produced exclusively by her.
On 2t2 (or, TUTTI 2) Curae, the opening track builds into a driving beat dominated groove maker, Tutti’s voice subliminally floating, hovering above, whilst shafts of electronica tempt. It’s on To Be we first hear that wondrous cornet sound, so analogous with Throbbing Gristle, so much so that it takes the listener back to when TG were first to be dangerous, it rears its presence, menacingly again and again on Never The Same and Stolen Time, albeit with differing paces and base complexities.
As on Curae, Tutti’s voice, conventional and throat singing brings concoction to 2t2, Respair has daunting elements within, the harmonica sounding reminiscent of a spaghetti western, as it climbs over orchestral murmurings. The conscious or unconscious split in the album, with the surrealist, soundscape ascending (and descending) from the fifth composition Stolen Time is anchored heavily across the final trice of songs: Threnody, Sonance and Limbic.
2t2 is an album to own on vinyl, and thus experience the duality of Tutti’s efforts, the pulsating and the obsidian. Cosey Fanni Tutti is still creating menace in the creative community.
