David Johansen (of New York Dolls) Has Died At Age 75: R.I.P.
We are very sad to report that David Johansen, lead singer for the New York Dolls and aka Buster Poindexter, has died at age 75.
Johansen had announce last month that he had stage four cancer. He died at his home on Staten Island, where he was born 75 years ago. David and The Dolls bridged the gap from glam to punk in the early 1970s producing one of the great (and most important) debut albums of all time…self titled, it was released in 1973, produced by Todd Rundgren and features classic tracks like Trash, Personality Crisis, Looking For A Kiss and Frankenstein. In addition to Johansen, the band featured the twin guitar attack of Johnny Thunders and Sylvian Sylvain and the rockin’ rhythm section of Arthur “Killer” Kane on bass and drummer Jerry Nolan.
The 13th Floor’s Marty Duda was fortunate to see them in November of 1973 at what he boasts is the best concert he’s ever attended…headliner Mott The Hoople (of course)…New York Dolls, second on the bill and openers were Aerosmith.
The Dolls imploded shortly after the release of their second album, In Too Much Too Soon, but David Johansen reinvented himself as Buster Poindexter and made more great records under his own name and as Buster.
