Death and Vanilla – Whistle And I’ll Come To You (Fire Records)
Swedish group Death And Vanilla, aesthetically, chronically, and craftily, sit somewhere, as creators, drawing on genres ranging from krautrock, enoism and DIY electronica. The (core) three members Anders Hansson, Magnus Bodin, Marleen Nilsson have been creating together since the 2010’s, drawing on (not exclusively) an (inferred) love of vintage film & TV.
Whistle And I’ll Come To You is inspired by a short television film which aired as part of a British Omnibus series in 1968, a rather spooky, disturbing and extramundane experience, that you too can watch free online, the 1968 version, not the 2010 remake.
Death And Vanilla craft dreams, narratives that meander (in a good way) soothing as they (to and) fro through alt-pop (in)to dream-pop and (on)to discreet electro-pop. But the three also have likely experienced enough darkness in their lives to offer flashes of dolorous provocation, so as not to tip into the sickly sweetness of tedium. Whistle And I’ll Come To You is an album that you’ll return to, not too often, so that whenever the endeavour eventuates, you discover anew, re-experience the euphoria of hearing the album for the first time.
