Dying Of The Light E.P. Release Party at The 13th Floor!

Dying Of The Light partyAuckland’s Dying Of The Light are about to release their new E.P., Monolithium. In celebration, the band will be performing at The 13th Floor on Sunday evening, December 8th and you are invited! They have also produced a video of the title track. The 13th Floor’s Metal Maven, Tove Partington, has written her impressions of the video here:

Dying of the Light’s second video for the song Monolithium (title track on the EP of the same name) is a visual representation of the darkness that is their signature sound. A mix of iconic New Zealand scenery and post apocalyptic wasteland, it sets the tone for the EP proper. Beautifully shot and reminiscent of Neurosis videos and sound, this video and the accompanying song is surprising when you find out the band is a 2 peice, and the video was shot over two days.

DYING-OF-THE-LIGHT-BAND-PHOTOThe clip is mainly shot on the Central Plateau, cut with footage of the band, and it’s a bit sci-fi, a bit apocalypse, and all metal. Doom is the central theme, but it is not without light. The footage inside the Rangipo subterranean hydro-power station (unseen for 30 years) is a coup, and as lover of abandoned places porn, makes the history nerd in me particularly happy.

The video takes you on a journey, like all good videos should, and sticks with you once it ends. Monolithium is beautifully layered, much like the song, and the mix of dreamy scenery and industrial heaviness is a brilliant juxtaposition. There is a definite theme of apocalypse, and the influences of the DOTL come through in this; musical and cinematic. It’s not without a bit of cheese, but all good post-apocalypse scenarios have undercurrents of humor; one needs a light in the dark.
