Dance is not new to Sofia McIntyre who has been a dancer since the age of four, eventually training at Unitec and going on to dance with Black Sheep Productions in awarding winning shows Faux Pas, How to Make Friends and Still Appear Normal, and Everything Anyone Ever Wanted. Sofia also dances regularly with Mary Jane O’Reilly’s neo-burlesque show, In Flagrante. With this group, Sofia has performed all over the world. In addition to her repertoire of live performance, Sofia has danced in music videos for artists such as JessB and The Miltones. She also teaches Pilates, a strictly codified movement form.

Faceless Hair Cry was the chance for Sofia to rediscover her own movement patterns. After using her body as a tool for other artist’s visions for so long, this is an exploration and  an expression of ownership. This show is a chance for her to be vulnerable in her body, to push the limits of what her movement style is and to experience having full autonomy. Having started the development for this show in the 2018 Short and Sweet Dance Festival, where it won the Risk Taker Award, and then developing it further for a double bill performance in Tempo Dance Festival 2019, this show has been brewing for a long time. For Auckland’s Fringe Festival 2020 at Basement Theatre, this version of Faceless Hair Cry will be the world premiere of it as a full-length piece.

Along with Sofia, there are two other artists joining her on the journey of creation – Paloma Schneideman and Sophia Hattingh. Paloma is a filmmaker and musician who has had her films shown at several international film festivals and has won various awards along the way. As a musician, she has composed scores for both dance and film. Sophia is a fashion designer whose primary interest is in innovative design for the female body. She has had her work displayed in many galleries and continues to design her own work today. This is the first time she has collaborated with a performing artist.
