First Reserve – Last One: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day
First Reserve has wasted no time in 2025. The Te-Whanganui-A-Tara based solo recording project of Ryan Connaghan (he/they) has become a staple of the city’s music scene in little over a year. Last One marks a new era for the songwriter, and is the first release from their upcoming, as of yet unannounced debut project.
Here is the blurb with more:
So far this year, Connaghan has been joined by their full-throttle live band supporting visiting internationals Hockey Dad and performed to their biggest crowd yet at the iconic CubaDupa festival. Locally, First Reserve shows have filled out iconic Wellington venues like San Fran, with the artist touring alongside staple acts such as PARK RD, There’s A Tuesday, Wet Denim, and Sure Boy.
Last One is a cathartic anthem that sees First Reserve stepping into a more mature and polished sound. Lyrically, the song finds Connaghan grappling with heartbreak and betrayal. They accept these feelings as nothing more than a passing wave by vowing to abstain from love entirely. The instrumental drives the song forward laying a solid foundation for Connaghan’s vocal delivery, which transitions from an almost spoken-word-like coldness to a climactic belt in the song’s outro. The song was produced by Tarn PK, marking the pairs first collaboration, with the producer set to feature across First Reserve’s upcoming project. Connaghan says working alongside Tarn has been a “dream.” “I’m so excited for people to hear these songs. Tarn and I have spent the last year working on them, and it’s the kind of music I’ve always wanted to make.”
Following this single, fans can expect First Reserve to make an announcement regarding new music (and related live shows) in the coming months.
