Hang Glider – Nighttime: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day

Hang Glider release Nighttime today ahead of their debut album due early next year! Hang Glider is a new alt-rock band from Te Whanganui A Tara, Wellington, featuring former members of The Ramps (Mike Gwyther, guitar and vocals) and Jawload/Hustler (Paul Lester, drums), as well as concert pianist and composer Emma Newton on bass and backing vox.

Here’s the blurb with more:

Hang GliderTheir debut single Nighttime is an 80s-goth tinged, garage rock anthem about letting go of your inhibitions and indulging in your dark side. Because when night falls, even the most wicked things can seem suddenly desirable.

Merging Duran Duran and Misfits style vocals, with a hook-laden chorus, could this be the unofficial song for the next season of Stranger Things?

The album features ‘Bat’ artwork by band-mate and legendary illustrator Blair Sayer (of Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters and Boneface fame to name but a few).

Frontman and lead guitarist Mike Gwyther produced and mastered the album at their Lyall Bay-based Tendril Studios.

The Nighttime single launches on Spotify and other streaming platforms today!

The album launches 1 Feb 2025 on Bandcamp:

Hang Glider

HANG GLIDER is a three-piece alt rock band from Wellington, New Zealand, Aotearoa. Fusing indie, 90s hardcore, grunge and garage rock, with Delta-blues riffs and storytelling, their lyrics cross the perilous divide between spiritual damnation, leaving your lover, and divine retribution. A hip-shaking rhythm section, splintering guitar riffs and heart-on-the-sleeve vocals will make you want to dance, ingest something you probably shouldn’t, and start a religious cult.

Frontman and guitarist Mike Gwyther has played guitar and fronted on the mic for UK hardcore main-stays Self-inflicted, along with Wellington pop-rockers The Ramps, and Aotearoa sludge metal act Secret Life of Plants. He plays rhythm-focused riffs, with big hooks and a molten-metal tone.

Drummer Paul Lester is a Wellington music-scene VIP. His bands Jawload and Hustler toured with Shihad and Head Like a Hole in the early-mid 90s. His style is tribal, riff-obsessed and infectious.

Bassist Emma Newton is a classically trained pianist. A consummate perfectionist, her bass playing is tight, tight, tight, and always melodic. Her backing vocals are harmonised, with an infectious distance.
