Jed Parsons – I Might Go Swimming: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day
Acclaimed indie singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jed Parsons is back with his first new music in four years – the deeply personal single, I Might Go Swimming.

The lush and dreamy I Might Go Swimming is a nod to parenthood and is the first song Jed has released since his 2021 album BRUNCH.
“I had been through a couple of years of writer’s block following the birth of my children. I found it hard to write from the heart about anything because nothing else felt significant enough to write about anymore,” explains the Christchurch-based artist.
After a break, the title and the chorus for I Might Go Swimming came to Jed on one of his first childfree afternoons in a long time.
“Having that true moment to myself felt like a very poignant stepping stone on my journey as a father. While completely mundane on the surface, the very simple idea of taking myself for a swim felt lonely, exciting, fulfilling and mindless all at the same time, and the rest of the song fell out of my brain pretty quickly from there.”
“The lyrics came to me at a time of realisation that my children were growing up and quickly becoming independent, and my role as a protector would slowly diminish over time.”
Written by Jed and co–produced with Will McGillivray AKA Goodwill, who was also on recording and mixing duties, I Might Go Swimming opens with a gentle acoustic guitar folk vibe, which descends into more modern and experimental production, which pairs lo-fi elements with an open and floaty soundscape.
“I recorded everything on the track at my friend Will’s humble studio, except for the beautiful bass part in the outro, played by Josh Logan (Mel Parsons, Yurt Party) who was paid with a pair of nicely marbled ribeye steaks.”
Helping to convey the intimate and introspective nature of the song, is a live acoustic video made by Adam Hogan (Lore Films) and Caleb MacDonald (Kita Films), which was shot on a boom lift in a typical Canterbury strong nor-west wind.
“If you’ve ever been on the end of a knuckle-boom, you’ll know how terrifying it is to be in one that’s fully extended on a blustery day. The song had only just been written at the time of filming, so the concoction of complete fear and the determination to get the performance right made for a particularly unique shoot and end result.”
I Might Go Swimming is a welcome return for the ‘jack of all trades’ who first made his debut as a solo artist in 2018 with the album MIDNIGHT FEAST, which was nominated for the Auckland Live Best Independent Debut at the 2019 Taite Music Prize.
