JENNY MITCHELL UNVEILS NORTH ISLAND TOUR AHEAD OF HEADLINING COUNTRY FESTIVAL IN BAY OF ISLANDS
This Autumn, Wellington based songwriter Jenny Mitchell is set to play a string of intimate shows in Auckland, Wellington, Palmerston North and Whangārei before headlining Paihia’s Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival (May 10th – 12th).
“Jenny Mitchell is going from strength to strength,” Jesse Mulligan, RNZ
Originally from Gore, the award-winning storyteller is now based in Wellington and is excited to share new work on this tour. Since releasing her most recent album, Tug of War (2022), Jenny has played sold out shows around the country, shared festival stages with Dave Dobbyn and was the only New Zealander selected to play at global music conference Folk Alliance International in 2023 (Kansas City, U.S). Tug of War was nominated for an Aotearoa Music Award, Australian Golden Guitar Award and includes the 2023 APRA Best Country Song; Trouble Finds a Girl.
“The Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival was one of the first festivals I was ever booked for. The late Reg McTaggart organised for 15-year-old me and my band to fly up the country and perform so it’s really special to be coming back again as a headliner this year,” says Jenny.
Alongside songwriting and touring, Jenny has spent the past two years directing a documentary about the history of country music in her hometown with Dunedin based filmmakers Scrambler. The film, Capital of Country Music, is set to premiere in Gore on May 30th during the town’s 10-day country music festival; Tussock Country.
“Working on the documentary has been such an incredible way to reflect on where I come from and connect with the people who were such a huge part of the early years of my musical life. It’s made me so proud to be a country artist in Aotearoa and even more thrilled about getting back on the road for this tour,” says Jenny.
