Julia Deans – Artworks Theatre: Sept 26, 2025 (13th Floor Concert Review)

Friday night saw the stripped-down solo version of Julia Deans and her acoustic guitar as she celebrated the first vinyl release of her stunning 2010 album Modern Fables.

A writer of songs since her mid-teens, the show was billed as a performance laced with old and new favourites, covers, and upcoming songs. It was that—and so much more.

Over the past few years, Julia has been one of our most visible artists, with solo shows, co-labs (Come TogetherExploding Rainbow OrchestraAtomic), a Fur Patrol reunion, and even stepping in at late notice to open for emerging artists.

Tonight, however, was about Julia—her stunning vocals and guitar—as she shared a curated set of songs, many of which had special meaning for her.

Having started with Clandestine off her last release We Light FireThe Wish You Wish You Had from Modern Fables, and Fur Patrol’Holy, it was clear that the audience was about to be treated to something special. The remainder of the first set introduced a selection of new songs written for her forthcoming release. These new tracks are simply some of the most compelling and intimate lyrics you are likely to hear.

After a short break, Julia started her second set, vowing the next songs would be more uplifting. She proceeded to deliver some stunning stripped-back versions from her back catalogue, including the still unreleased A Fine Lie and an absolutely stunning We Light Fire, dedicated to her late grandfather, the painter A. A. Deans. She topped off the evening with the often-requested fan favourite Lydia, delivered tonight with a touch of wry humour.

Despite this being only her second gig on the island—and her first since 2016—Julia appeared very comfortable in the small theatre setting and demonstrated her talent as a musician, songwriter, and storyteller. At the end of the almost two-hour set, the audience had been treated to something special, personal, and genuinely moving.

This was an intimate and compelling evening with a national treasure, always at the top of her game.

Modern Fables is near the top of the new release charts, We Light Fire vinyl has limited stock still available, and her new album is something to anticipate and pop on pre-order @holidayrecords.

Special mention to the Arthouse crew who made this happen.
