KMTP – 2:45 (Getting Old): New Song Of The Day

KMTP has released 2:45 (Getting Old) and the album, With Love, KMTP, will see the light of day on September 28th.

Here’s the blurb from Sunreturn Records:

K M T P is the musical project of Keria Paterson (Te Arawa, Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāi Tahu, they/them), a musician and songwriter currently based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Before starting K M T P, Paterson spent the majority of their time behind the drum kit, performing in groups like Polyester, Dirty Pixels and more recently Dead Famous People.

KMTPTheir debut EP was made by curating jangly guitars, melodic casio keyboards and earnest storytelling. In the three years since K M T P have cranked it up, letting listeners lose themselves in smooth layers of distortion and fuzz, all the while keeping sincere songwriting firmly at the core.

Today K M T P have announced their debut album ‘With Love, K M T P’ (released on Vinyl LP, Cassette and Digitally on September 28 via Sunreturn), and share a new single and video for 2:45 (Getting Old).

Recorded by Peter Ruddell (Wax Chattels, Sulfate) at Jonathan Pearce’s (The Beths) studio, and mastered by James Goldsmith, 2:45 (Getting Old) bristles with energy, it’s toasty hot and comes complete with a bedroom pop sound and a sing-a-long outro.

“I wrote 2:45 (Getting Old) in 2020” says Paterson. “At the time, I wanted to explore more in standard tuning, and write something similar to a lot of the NZ songs I listened to growing up. The song deals with personal experiences I went through living at an old flat, as well as how I was doing mentally and physically at the time. It’s kind of a check-in song for me; a reminder to make sure I’m doing ok and to not take things too seriously all the time.”

“2:45 (Getting Old) marks the middle of the record, and sort of lifts the vibe back up before getting into some heavier tracks near the end of the album. I’ve tried to guide the listener on an emotional journey throughout the album, so I think the track serves as a bit of relief before things are kicked up a notch.”

2:45 (Getting Old) is accompanied with a NZ On Air funded music video made by Sports Team, the production company who have worked with the likes of The Beths, Marlon Williams and Anthonie Tonnon. It’s a classic hangout video, where the band got together and Sports Team passed a couple cameras around and just left them running.

“We like to be extremely prepared going into a shoot,” says Sports Team, “but with a video like this so much of it is found in the edit, so there are a lot of unknowns.”

“Location is key. Annabel found a fruit orchard that would let us shoot. We thought that a background of orange trees would be cool and had a lot of potential for hi-jinx. Directing the band was the most fun part, we just set them tasks or challenges and would usually roll the whole song. They all got the vibe immediately. There’s probably 50 different versions of this video, so we just found the version with the most chaotic, surprising, funny moments. We’ve been so obsessed with this song for months and cannot wait for the album.”

Paterson reflects “I am so grateful to have the Sports Team involved in making a music video. Watching back over the final clip, I think Sports Team beautifully captured the essence of the day and I’m stoked with how it turned out.”

2:45 (Getting Old) is the first single from their debut album With Love K M T P, available on Limited Edition Vinyl LP, Cassette and Digitally on September 28 via Sunreturn.
