Noveller: The 13th Floor Interview
Noveller is the solo electric guitar project of American musician Sarah Lipstate. As is evidence on her new album, A Pink Sunset For No One, Noveller creates stunning soundscapes that are both cinematic and emotionally bracing. Noveller spent much of last year touring as the opening act with none other than Iggy Pop, who, it […]

Atmosphere with Brother Ali – Powerstation February 25, 2017
If I am fortunate enough to have any regular readers of my work, they will know that I have a long-standing appreciation of hip-hop and rap. My love, on reflection seems to have few bounds, stretching from G-Funk, Boom-Bap and Gangsta, through to politically conscious, avant-garde or a smidge of underground club hip-hop. If the […]
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band – Mt Smart Stadium February 25, 2017
Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band have been on the road for over 40 years. Their concerts are legendary, both for their length and the amount of energy expended on stage. For those who may feel that they missed out on the act in their prime (Bruce is 67, several members have passed […]
Remain in Light, PumpHouse Theatre – 25 February 2017
Kiwi playwright Stephen Sinclair’s Remain in Light is a juggernaut allegory for our times – a one-act play set in a dystopian world where the sun no longer rises. The world premiere was staged at Takapuna’s PumpHouse Theatre on Saturday night to a nearly full house. With all its resources exhausted, the world is plunged […]
Mundy & The Seamus Begley Trio – Tuning Fork February 24, 2017
It was a lively crowd that came out to Auckland’s Tuning Fork on this Friday night to catch some Irish music by the Seamus Begley Trio and singer-songwriter Mundy. But one has to wonder if they were really there to listen to music or just make their own noise.
Fiery Tongues – Bats Theatre February 24, 2017
It’s been a long time since I was at Bats Theatre, at least in the audience. Like Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement I grew up on the concrete floor of that small but perfectly cramped stage sweating blood for my art. The big difference, of course is they went on to make it big as […]

Pissed Jeans – Why Love Now (Sub Pop)
With the traditional musical fuel of politics and politicians being more volatile than ever, for a band as tuned into the moment as Pissed Jeans it must seem like a good time to be punk. But instead of taking aim at traditional targets, Pissed Jeans’ latest record Why Love Now is a self-aware and biting […]
Alison Krauss – Windy City (Capitol)
Alison Krauss might be one of the most underrated, but prolific, artists of the ‘Country’ genre. Although, what that actually is these days is a pretty loose beast. Most of us will know about her 27 Grammys (apparently she’s tied for second place in the winner stakes), many for best Bluegrass Album with Union Station.

Jane Weaver Announces New Album ‘Modern Kosmology’ Released 19th May 2017 on Fire Records
Jane Weaver is Metamorphosing… Very alone in a home-spun cocoon with a metronomic heartbeat and the phasing voice of her former and future selves. This is the real sound of solitude but far from silence. One voice, a vulnerable pulse, channeling a lifetime of human experience via melodic codes, naked with multicoloured wings and expanding […]
Midge Ure: The 13th Floor Interview
Midge Ure has worn many musical hats over the years, and he’ll be trying them all on during his upcoming, 7-date Something From Everything New Zealand tour. In addition to his own solo work, writing the Band-Aid anthem Do They Know It’s Christmas? and his band Ultravox, Ure was a member of Slik, The Rich […]
