Lisa Crawley – The Gatekeeper: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day
Acclaimed singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lisa Crawley has given fans another taste of her upcoming EP, with today’s release of her latest single, The Gatekeeper. Here is the blurb with more:
‘The Gatekeeper’ is a toe-tapping, hook-laden, indie-pop tune, which grabs you immediately with its upbeat, playful instrumentation and uplifting chorus. Scratch below the surface and there’s also an empowering message.
“It’s about not letting someone in that doesn’t deserve to be there,” says Lisa. “I hope listeners will sing along to it, but that they’ll also be reminded to know their worth and to be selective about who gets to have a say in your life. It’s a message that is meaningful to me both professionally and personally.”
The NZ-born, LA-based artist explains that ‘The Gatekeeper’ started as a much slower piano demo. But working alongside producer and mix/master engineer John Spiker, the pair workshopped the song to be more upbeat. Lisa did the piano and clarinet arrangements and John played all the guitars. She adds that in the process they identified the need for some sort of solo, but couldn’t quite figure out what the best instrument would be. It was their search for the final piece of the puzzle, which led to the concept for the tongue-in-cheek, mockumentary-style video (think The Office) that accompanies ‘The Gatekeeper’.
“The video depicts a bunch of guys coming into the studio and telling me what my song was missing and auditioning to do the solo. Each character played someone that I have definitely encountered in my life and career as a musician,” says Lisa.
‘The Gatekeeper’ follows the recent release of ‘What Can You Do’, which Rolling Stone AU/NZ described as “melancholic yet hopeful… anchored in a delicate, Beatles-esque arrangement… the perfect soundtrack to decompress after an overwhelming day.”
Both songs are from the upcoming EP, NEW GIRL SYNDROME, which is out on April 25.
