Luca Joass – young & free: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day

Ōtautahi Folk-pop artist Luca Joass steps into the scene with the nostalgic and ever-catchy, young & free.

Here is the blurb with more:

In his new, summer-singalong single, Joass reflects on drifting away from the friends you grew up with and wanting to hold onto the innocence of youth. young & free invites us to put aside the worries of everyday life and let ourselves be as careless as we once were.

Joass’ rich vocals shine on the track, with a warm, grounded sound. Connecting on their own memories of childhood, Joass co-wrote young & free with RnB artist  Tonyo and Dark Pop singer/songwriter Myah Eve who he met in the SOLE Music Academy Artist Development Program. Joass and Tonyo co-produced the track with additional production and mixing by Will McGillivray. The artists’ tastes blend seamlessly, creating a fun, campfire sound and a chorus you’ll want to sing from light to dark.

young & free is a long time coming from Luca Joass, who’s been deep in the Aotearoa music scene since before he was even born. In 2001, you would have found his pregnant mother playing fiddle next to his dad at staple Wellington Irish Pub Molly Malone’s in the Celtic-Folk band Hobnail (formerly The Hobnail Boots). Naturally, music was a key part of his life growing up and Joass keenly took to playing guitar as soon as he was big enough to hold one. As a teenager, Luca was likely to be found busking his heart out in the Wellington suburbs. Now, He resides in Christchurch, developing his music career whilst running his own video production company Neato Productions.

Having finally released his debut single to the world, Luca will be celebrating the release of young & free at Darkroom, Christchurch on Wednesday 10th September.

About Luca Joass:

You won’t find folk-pop artist Luca Joass much happier than with a guitar in his hands and a song in his heart. Whether he’s busking in the streets, playing for a crowd, or at home on the couch, he’ll play until his fingers are sore and his voice croaky (and then a little longer). Luca wears his heart on his sleeve with his songwriting, weaving emotive lyricism in the vein of Dean Lewis and Hozier, with the uplifting hook-anthems of The Lumineers and Myles Smith.

Luca Joass has found home on stage since before he was born, with his fiddle-playing mother taking stage in Wellington Irish bars into the latest days of her pregnancy. Luca grew

up travelling around the NZ folk scene with his parents, but as soon as he was big enough to hold a guitar, he was away strumming. By his teenage years, he was performing on stage with

his parents and shortly after took to performing on his own.

Now a young man (or perhaps old boy), Luca lives and performs in Christchurch while growing his craft. As a recent alumni of SOLE Music Academy’s Artist Development Programme, Luca has seen mentorship from the likes of Platinum-record artist Sacha Vee, Shapeshifter’s Sam Trevethick and Silver Scroll nominee Amelia Murray (Fazerdaze). Taking inspiration from his folk background, and bringing it a modern twist, Luca’s songs are rife with catchy melodies and a whole lot of heart.

Luca has been regularly performing in bars and cafes in Ōtautahi and around the Motu since the age of 18. His prolific songwriting and eagerness to connect with other musicians has led him to perform in songwriters nights, like the Christchurch Folk Club Young Songwriter’s Show, and Deborah Wilding’s Songwriters’ Collective. He’s also opened for local and international touring acts, such as Bill Hickman and Daniel Champagne. Last year, Luca took stage at Christchurch’s Gindulgence Gin Festival as one of the primary entertainers (second only to Gin).

Luca’s set and ready to release his debut single young & free on September 5th. Painting a personal picture of young adult-hood, Joass reflects on drifting away from the friends you grew up with and wanting to hold onto the innocence of youth. Luca co-produced the track with fellow SOLE Artist Development alumni, Tonyo, as well as additional production and mix from Will McGillivray.

Alongside his music career, Luca has a continued passion for creative spaces. After graduating from the New Zealand Broadcasting School with a degree in Screen and TV production, he’s worked as an audio engineer on shows such as What Now, Brainbusters and Take the Mic. More recently, Luca co-founded video production company Neato Productions where he has produced social media brand videos, worked as videographer, and directed music videos. This includes the video for Keren Mara’s Under the Wind which received a nomination for best music video at NZ Web Fest.
