Michael Llewellyn – I’m Gorgeous (13th Floor Album Review)

Wellington-based musician Michael Llewellyn celebrates New Zealand Month with his second album release I’m Gorgeous.

Llewellyn is known for a compelling narrative delivered with the flourish of a poet in his songs dispatched through a deceptively powerful voice: at times soft and breathy that cranks up when the occasion calls.

This album doesn’t disappoint as Llewellyn explores familiar themes of the heart over an eclectic mix of music. From the upbeat, poppy sounds of Home Sometime to the sombre and reflective Down by the Packs, swamp rock The Cramps-inspired The Fish Song to Brit Pop Pulp-styled title track I’m Gorgeous, Llewellyn has a huge cupboard of influences in his repertoire.

Llewellyn is backed by a talented group of musicians –  Isabella Smith (backing vocals), James Morgan (guitar), Reuben Topzand (keyboards), Henry Smithers (bass), Josh Dominikovich (drums), Nick Jones (violin), Conor Feehly (Percussion) and Edward Mee (Trumpet) – and there’s even a cameo from the Avondale Intermediate Choir on Pray for Rain, a song that will resonate with many delivering a message of hope through a collective purpose.

I’m Gorgeous is a collection of songs that won’t tire with repeated listening and can sound appropriate to whatever mood you’re in. And the great news is that the album will be showcased in a nationwide tour of Aotearoa New Zealand kicking off in June alongside the ever-popular French For Rabbits.
