Miller Yule – Lock Me Up: New Song Of The Day

Miller Yule gets this new music Friday going with a new single, Lock Me Up.

We’ve been following Miller Yule’s career here at 13th Floor for quite a while now. And here is his latest. It’s called Lock Me Up and here’s the record company blurb with more info:

Miller Yule is a Kiwi Americana singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist keeping the classic ‘troubadour rock’ flame burning bright! Miller began playing the drums at age 11 and dreamed of being in a rock band so much that he would organise his own tours of local primary schools and dress up as a combination of his musical heroes to perform. Shortly after picking up the drums, his older brother taught him how to play “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes on the electric guitar. Finally, his father’s record collection of Bob Dylan, Dire Straits, Elton John, and Bruce Springsteen inspired Miller to begin his own songwriting journey that’s lead him to releasing his newest tune, “Lock Me Up”, on October 29.

The track was mostly recorded at the notable Studio ‘A’ at Roundhead Studios in Auckland, owned by Neil Finn (Crowded House), with additional recording at Big Pop Studios. “Lock Me Up” was produced by Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers), engineered by Scott Seabright, mixed by Clint Murphy, and mastered by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound in Nashville. The recording assistants at Roundhead were Emily Wheatcroft-Snape, Patrick Hill, and Angus Grainger.

Miller gives his personality to a classic love story in these lyrics, explaining that,“‘Lock Me Up’ is your classic unrequited love song with a twist. We’ve all had a crush on someone who doesn’t want us back, so I pondered the romantic notion of ‘stealing someone’s heart.’ And despite the romantic intention, I found myself thinking ‘stealing isn’t a good thing!’, especially with something as delicate as another person’s heart!

“I like how the lyrics convey that I know what I’m doing isn’t right but I can’t help myself, a hopeless romantic out of control, a fugitive on the run, pleading guilty and that I need to be locked up before I commit the crime of stealing your heart.”

Embarking on his musical journey in 2016, Miller Yule’s acclaimed introductory EP Shoot Me In The Heart debuted at #4 on the New Zealand Albums Chart. The EP’s folky-pop and honest songwriting aesthetic proved popular with legendary American songwriter Ben Harper who asked Miller to join him on his 2016 New Zealand tour, thus unleashing Miller’s passionate live show. Miller loves the intimacy of a solo acoustic show as much as losing himself on stage with his full backing band.

In 2017 Miller turned up the volume with his single “Diamonds.” The rockier sound showcased a different side of Miller and complimented his dynamic live performances. So much so that the next year, Miller released a 7-track live music and video EP, Miller Yule Live. Wonderfully executed, the live EP captures Miller’s energetic, emotive, guitar melting, harmonica soaring, re-interpretation of his recorded songs. 2019 saw Miller Yule hide away working on his next body of work due for release in 2020, but due to the cog in the works that is COVID-19, the new music is finally able to come out now at the end of 2021!
