Mmmm Mmmm – Kings Arms July 15, 2017
Mmmm Mmmm was a multi-stage, multi-band event at Auckland’s Kings Arms featuring the likes of Earth Tongue, The Beths and Miss June.
Entrance on the night was through the sports bar, which is where one of several stages were set up to accommodate all the live music to come.
Arriving at 9:00, things were starting a bit slow, with DJ Sandwitch doing his best to get things jumping. By the time Earth Tongue took the main stage there was a good sized crowd. If you haven’tr seen this Wellington-based duo, be sure to as soon as possible.
Consisting of Gussie Larkin on guitar and vocals (also of The Mermaidens) and Ezra Simons on drums and vocals (also of Red Sky Blues), these two make a totally unexpected sound. Its as if Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi has inhabited the body of a petite, 20-something blonde female.
Gussie throws out some mean riffs and the band really catches fire when Ezra adds his demonic vocals.
The other highlight of the evening was The Beths. Fronted by Elizabeth Stokes and featuring guitarist Jonathan Pearce…who was most recently seen playing with Aldous Harding…this quartet has a great spirit and cool songs to go with it.
Unfortunately, I had an early work call the next day, so I left after The Beths, but don’t worry, 13th Floor photographer Ivan Karczewski was there the entire evening and has plenty of photos to show for it.
