Music In Parks: Georgia Lines – Aotea Square: January 18, 2025
Georgia Lines headlined the third of 18 free concerts in this summer’s Music in Parks series on a bright, sunny Saturday afternoon at Auckland’s Aotea Square.
Also on the bill were Rumpus Machine, Fan Club and Fin Rah Zel.
Fin Rah Zel
I arrived just in time to catch Fin Rah Zel, who are from Taranaki and today are augmented by backing vocalists Liana Hart and Frau Knotz who added a bit of gospel to the band’s reggae beats. It was also front man Brian Norton’s birthday so they were in a celebratory mood, one that fed on to the crowd basking in the sun.
Norton proved to be a soulful singer and they carried off a lovely version of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car, no doubt in honour of Luke Combs’ concert due to take place later in the day at Eden Park.
Georgia Lines
Georgia and her band took over at about 3:40 in the afternoon, just as the sun was giving way to a cool breeze. This was Georgia’s first gig of the New Year and she was in fine voice.
The set was a truncated version of her show at the PowerStation that took place last year, one that we at 13th Floor voted high up in our top 10 of 2024.
Georgia reminisced about her very first show…another Music In Parks gig back when she was a teenager.
When she comes out from behind her keyboard, Georgia is an enthusiastic performer, urging singalongs, dancealongs and encouraging us to choose between a cover of Billie Eilish or Bonnie Raitt.
Billie’s When The Party’s Over got the nod today, while Faith and Trust got some fans up and dancing.
It was a great way to start the year and a lovely way to spend an afternoon. I think Anna Coddington, another 13th Floor favourite, will be here next month. Maybe we’ll see you then.
