Nadia Reid – Tuning Fork April 8, 2017
For those fans waiting to hear Nadia Reid perform tunes from her new album with a full band, well, they’ll have to wait a little longer. After playing only three songs, Nadia was forced to halt her show due to ill health.
It all started well. The Broken Heartbreakers turned in a very well-received set as Auckland’s Tuning Fork quickly filled up. This show had sold out. There was a definite buzz going around.
Nadia Reid started her set solo, with a new song, possibly titled All Of My Love. Accompanied by her own guitar, she sounded absolutely exquisite and the audience was rapt.
Guitarist Sam Taylor then appeared and the two of them played Preservation, the title track from the new album. Again, they sounded wonderful.
But at the end of the song Nadia addressed the crowd.
“Hello, how are you?” she asked. Then…”My body shut down. I’m going to do my very best for you. I just need all your good energy and we’ll be fine.”
With that, the rest of the band…bass and drums…appeared and they proceeded to play Right On Time, which, again, sounded fantastic.
But all was not well, and after 13 minutes and three songs, Nadia could not continue.
“I’m so sorry, today my body’s completely shut down and my voice is gone and today I thought quite seriously about cancelling the show and I really didn’t want to because there’s fuckin’ 400 of you here and this is a really special show. But I’m fucked. I can’t sing. I can’t sing. I can’t sing.”
She continued with a croaky voice…
“So, we’re going to have to cool it here and we’re going to have to reschedule the show. I’m really sorry. My body’s shut down, I’m really sorry.”
Despite the disappointment, applause rippled through the crowd, showing the respect and admiration for an artist who obviously gave everything she had during those first three songs and could not physically continue.
Before she left the stage, Nadia told us that she had been at the emergency doctor two hours earlier. “This is awful”, she said.
With plenty of time on their hands, the crowd reacted well, many hanging around to have a drink or two and comment on what just went down. Everyone I spoke to was very sympathetic…no one seemed upset.
About a half hour later, The Tuning Fork’s Steve Wheadon took the stage to announce that the show would most likely be rescheduled for the following Thursday, April 13th.
At 10:45, Nadia herself, posted on Facebook:
To my Auckland show attendees, I’m so sorry for having to stop my show tonight. I tried my absolute best to do the show but my body has just stopped and I couldn’t do the songs justice. Thank you so much for coming. Our show will now be shifted to Thursday 13th April. Next Thursday. Any issues or refunds please contact Ticketmaster. So sorry.
And that was that. We shall reconvene on April 13th.

I’m so sorry for her.I just read a glowing review in the April edition of Mojo magazine today and they give her 4 stars for Preservation which IS a big deal for this U.K. publication.
I do hope she comes over this way to present the album with her backing band in full health soon!
